Why Bariatric & Metabolic Institute at Medical City Las Colinas

– Hello, I’m Dr. Melanie Hafford and I serve as the medical director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute of Bariatric Surgery here at
the Medical City Las Colinas. I am a board certified
general and bariatric surgeon. On behalf of the members
of the bariatric team here at the Medical City Las Colinas, I would like to welcome you to our online seminar
for bariatric surgery. Today, we will cover topics
including who is a candidate, what to expect in preparing
for surgery, surgical options and what to expect in
the postoperative period. Obesity is defined by a
person’s body mass index or BMI. Body mass index is calculated based on a person’s height and weight. It does not take into account
gender or your body frame. A BMI of 30 or greater
is considered to be obese and a BMI of 40 or greater is considered to be severe obesity. What are the consequences of obesity? There are medical complications
related to obesity as well as financial considerations such as increased time off of work. Let’s talk about the medical
consequences of morbid obesity. Many patients suffer from
high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea or heart burn as well as gastroesophageal
reflux disease. Each of these conditions
are strongly associated with morbid obesity and have been shown to
improve with the weight loss. Bariatric care is meant
to be comprehensive. We address the causes,
treatment and prevention of morbid obesity. There are many treatment
options for obesity and these may be different
for each patient. Treatment options include diet, exercise, behavior modification, medical and pharmacological
treatments and surgery. The main strength of the
Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Medical City Las Colinas is our dedicated and compassionate team. We are here to ensure that you achieve your weight loss goals. This team includes fellowship
trained bariatric surgeons, nurses, nurse educators,
registered dietitians, physical therapists, patient advocates, psychologists and
administrative personnel. All of these people are
available to ensure you succeed along your weight loss journey. In the next video, my
colleague Dr. Mustafa Alibhai will speak with you in more detail regarding surgical treatment
options for obesity.
