Weight Loss Surgery Benefits May Be Short-Lived

Weight loss surgery can produce dramatic results,
but it seems that keeping it off can be a challenge. I’m Erin White with your latest
health news. A new study from Israel found that many patients who underwent the weight
loss surgery laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, or LSG, regained their weight lost and saw
a return of type 2 diabetes. About 75 percent of the stomach is removed during an LSG, but
the intestines remain intact. This limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one
time, while not disrupting the body’s absorption of nutrients. Researchers noted that, while
LSG was effective in helping patients lose weight initially, about 40 percent of patients
studied did not sustain these improvements in the long run. Speak with your doctor about
an effective weight-loss strategy for you.
