The Connection Journey: Types of Bariatric Surgery

– We offer two procedures
here at Children’s Hospital. The first is a sleeve gastrectomy,
and that’s the procedure we offer most often,
and the other procedure is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. – Vertical sleeve
gastrectomy is a procedure where the surgeon using a laparoscope and minimally invasive
equipment to make tiny little incisions in the abdominal wall and is with those tiny
incisions and a camera able to see the stomach
and is able to remove about 80% of it. The Roux-en-Y gastric
bypass, the surgeon again uses the small incisions and the camera and goes in the abdomen and divides the stomach in two actually, into a very small part
and then a larger part. You actually take the intestines, or a loop of intestine, and bring it up to that smaller stomach,
so you’re actually creating a smaller stomach, but you’re also isolating the
larger part of the stomach that probably has a lot to
do with the hunger signals that we’re getting. Both sleeve gastrectomy
as well as gastric bypass have the effect of reducing hunger and also prolonging that period of time that we feel like we’re full after a meal.
