Testing a Culturally Sensitive Approach for Weight Loss Maintenance

Testing a Culturally Sensitive Approach for Weight Loss Maintenance

Our project is really has the major focus
on being culturally sensitive which involves where most people talk about cultural competence
but cultural sensitivity is not only having the knowledge, skills, awareness, and experiences
to provide care to culturally diverse persons but it’s also in terms of the cultural sensitivity
part is displaying or conveying that knowledge in ways that enable the patients to feel comfortable,
to feel respected, and to feel as though they can trust the doctors. We are comparing two weight loss maintenance
programs, one of those programs is the patient-centered culturally sensitive program and the second
is what we call the standard motivational interviewing program and so for the culturally
sensitive one which of course I’m very excited about we actually have black women to identify
what they wanted their doctors to do and not do and to say and not say when talking to
them about obesity and talking to them about weight and they will want to see that doctors
who are trained in the culturally sensitive program to see if they are if their patients
have better outcomes than those who were trained in the standard motivational interviewing
program and so of course those outcomes that we’re looking at are weight, weight loss maintenance
and then we also want to see if that has any impact on their blood pressure, there cholesterol
levels, as well as their lipids. I see and hope that the tools that we developed
for the physicians in terms of how to talk to their patients that those can actually
be disseminated nationally, I hope to see that our health smart program which again have
the women actually teaching each other and sharing with each other in terms of what is
important and giving them the support that they need I hope to see that program actually
implemented nationally.
