New Life Bariatric Associates on a new weight loss surgery

Karen: WELCOME BACK. I’M JOINED TODAY BY DR. SHARMA AND HE BROUGHT ALONG WITH HIM JODI YOUNG WHO SPECIALIZES IN HELPING PEOPLE WHO HAVE AN ADDICTION WITH FOOD. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT A NEW PROCEDURE YOU’RE DOING LOCALLY. IN FACT, IT’S ONLY DONE HERE OUT OF THE ENTIRE SOUTHEAST REGION. IS THAT RIGHT? YES. IT’S TWO BALLOONS. WE JUST STARTED DOING THE PROCEDURE. Karen: WHAT THIS IS, IT’S TWO BALLOONS THAT ARE ATTACHED AND THEY ACTUALLY — YOU INSERT THIS INTO THE PERSON WHO IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH WEIGHT. YES. WE RESHAPE THE BALLOON AND THOSE HAVING THE PROBLEMS, A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE PROBLEMS, THEIR WEIGHT IS NOT THAT SIGNIFICANT WITH THE TYPE OF SURGERY. AND WE DID NOT HAVE ANY DEVICE BEFORE BUT IT’S A TOOL TO GIVE TO THE PATIENTS. THEY’RE HAVING PROBLEMS AND WE CORRECT THEIR WEIGHT. THIS IS A NEW ADDITION AND THIS IS USED FOR PEOPLE WHERE BMI IS HIGH. THEY HAVE THE BEHAVIORAL CHANGES AND THEY’RE STILL STRUGGLING. IT’S A NON SURGICAL WAY IN WHICH THE BALLOONS ARE ENTERED INTO THE STOMACH. THEY HELP THEM LOSE WEIGHT. Karen: AND YOU COUNSEL ALONGSIDE THE PROCEDURE BECAUSE THIS IS A PHYSICAL CHANGE THAT HAPPENS AND IS INSERTED BUT THERE’S ALSO A MENTAL COMPONENT AS WELL. COMPLAIN THAT TO US. WELL, BASICALLY WITH THIS PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE, IT’S A 12-MONTH PROGRAM ALONG WITH THE BALLOON AND DURING THAT TIME, WE REALLY HAVE TO HELP THE PATIENTS TO CHANGE THE REASONS WHY THEY EAT IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT HELPING THEM WITH A TOOL BUT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THAT, WE REALLY HAVE TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. SOME OF THE STRESS EATING, DOR BOMB EATING AND HELP THEM MAKE THOSE CHANGES. MOST PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THEY SHOULD EAT. IT’S CHANGING WHY THEY EAT. Karen: I FIND IT FASCINATING, TOO. A LOT OF TIMES THESE ARE LEARNED BEHAVIORS AND YOU GET THESE WHEN YOU’RE A CHILD. SOMETIMES WHEN KIDS GET HURT OR FALL DOWN, OFTENTIMES PARENTS WILL TRY TO MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER, GIVE THEM A POPSICLE OR SOMETHING HIGH CALORIE TO MAKE THEM HAPPY AND THIS CAN BE SOMETHING THAT THEY’RE FINDING OUT IF IT HAPPENS IN CHILDHOOD, THAT CAN LEAD TO OBESITY LATER IN LIFE. IS THAT RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. THERE’S LEARNED COPING STRATEGIES. WE HAVE DIFFERENT EMOTIONS THAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH AND CHANNEL IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. UNFORTUNATELY A LOT OF POPULATION WE TREAT AND THAT WE DEAL WITH HAVE LEARNED HOW TO DEAL WITH THEIR EMOTIONS AND THEIR STRESS AND BOREDOM WITH FOOD. USUALLY WE SEE CHILDREN START WITH THE FOOD WE EAT. WE HAVE TO EFFECTIVELY HELP THEM TO CHANGE NEW COPING STRATEGIES. MORE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES, ARTISTIC, THERE’S ALL KINDS OF OPTIONS OUT THERE THAT YOU HAVE TO INTRODUCE TO THEM. A LOT OF TIMES THEY DON’T KNOW IT OR PHYSICALLY CAN’T DO SOME OF THESE THINGS. Karen: AND WE HAVE VIDEO OF THE ACTUAL PROCEDURE. WE’RE GOING TO SHOW YOU THAT NOW. TALK WHAT WE’RE SEEING. WHAT I WANT TO CLARIFY, THIS IS NOT A SURGERY. IT DOESN’T LEAVE A SCAR OR INSIGNIFICANTS OR — INCISION OR ANYTHING. WE PUT IT IN THE STOMACH AND INFLATE THE BALLOONS. IT’S ONE PROCEDURE. IT’S ABOUT SIX TO EIGHT MINUTES AND YOU GO TO SLEEP AND THEN WAKE UP, GO HOME. IT’S VERY SIMPLE. IT’S NOT A PERMANENT PROCEDURE. UP TO SIX MONTHS THE DEVICE IS REMOVED AND THEN BY THAT TIME YOU’VE ADOPTED ALL THE CHANGES IN THE EATING PETITION — PATTERNS. 90% OF PEOPLE STILL LOSE WEIGHT AFTER THEY HAVE THE BALLOONS. YOU’RE GIVEN A DEVICE IN YOUR STOMACH. IT MAKES YOU FEEL FULL. PATIENTS LOSE 30 TO 40 POUNDS. EVEN AFTER REMOVAL OF THE BALLOONS, THEY CONTINUE TO LOSE WEIGHT. SO THE IMPORTANT THING IS, IT’S A 12 MONTH PROGRAM. THAT’S WHAT WE OFFER TO THE PATIENTS WITH THE INITIAL CONSULTATION AND A MONTHLY FOLLOWUP. IT’S INTRODUCTION OF THIS BALLOON. SIX MONTHS LATER THE REMOVAL OF THE BALLOON AND HOPEFULLY THEY CAN CONTINUE TO LOSE WEIGHT AND ACHIEVE A TARGET WHICH IS GOOD FOR THEM. Karen: THAT’S WONDERFUL. YOU’RE OFFERING PREEVALUATIONS. IF SOMEONE IS AT HOME WATCHING AND WOULD LIKE TO TAKE PART, AT LEAST YOU COULD LOOK AT THEM TO SEE IF THEY QUALIFY. WHAT SHOULD THEY DO? THEY CAN CALL OUR OFFICE AND WE CAN DO A QUICK EVALUATION. NOT EVERYONE IS A CANDIDATE. THEY HAVE TO QUALIFY. THEIR B.M.I. SHOULD BE 30 TO 40. WE ARE HOPING AT SOME POINT THEY WILL INCREASE BUT RIGHT NOW THAT’S WHAT IT IS. THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PRIOR SURGERY IN THEIR STOMACH. MAKE SURE THEY CAN — THEY ARE HEALTHY ENOUGH TO UNDERGO SIX TO 10 MINUTES OF SLEEP AND THEN DO THE PROCEDURE. Karen: THAT’S FANTASTIC. I THINK IT’S EXTRA GREAT YOU’RE HELPING WORK WITH THE PEOPLE SO THIS IS A LEARNED BEHAVIOR THAT WILL LAST EVEN AFTER THE DEVICE COMES OUT. ABSOLUTELY. Karen: LISTEN. THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING HERE. IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO COME IN, THE PHONE NUMBER IS RIGHT THERE. THANK YOU BOTH FOR COMING IN. AND COMING UP, PENN STATE WILL PLAY GEORGIA ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 2, 2016.
