Les fruits & légumes et la santé oculaire

Les fruits & légumes et la santé oculaire

At first glance, you’d think that food
and vision have little to do together… Yet, there are many similarities! Let’s see which ones.  First of all, like fruit & vegetables,
our eyes contain antioxidants. Our lens, for example, contains
significant amounts of vitamin C and our retina, contains carotenoids
– lutein and zeaxanthin – two natural pigments
that help maintain a good vision found in cabbage, spinach,
oranges, as well as in eggs. And in order for our body
to assimilate them the best it can, the best thing is to combine them
with a little bit of fat like olive oil, for example. Okay, what exactly
do these antioxidants actually do here? Well, they take care of us
and especially of our vision. Because our eyes are particularly sensitive
to oxidative stress, a mechanism that contributes
to the development of vision disorders such as cataracts – a disease that affects
the lens by making it opaque – or Age-Related Macular Degeneration,
which deteriorates the retina. In both cases, these conditions result
in more or less severe vision loss. The good news is
that we can reduce the disease risk thanks to a high antioxidant diet! So to cherish our eyes,
let’s pick up good habits! First of all, give priority to a healthy diet,
rich in fruit and vegetables which will provide us with antioxidants and also reduce our risk
of type 2 diabetes and obesity, two diseases where oxidative stress is high. Then avoid smoking, or quit, because tobacco increases oxidative stress and causes antioxidants
in the blood to decline. So convinced? It’s a no-brainer for us!  To learn more about fruits and vegetables,
