[Background Music] I’m Dr. Ferguson.
I am a bariatric medicine physician, which is a new field. What it is, is obesity
medicine. This epidemic is nationwide, it’s worldwide. It’s in
adults, it’s in kids and even more so it’s in Veterans. Weight
management is very complicated and our patients are very complicated.
We look at all of the factors that contribute and we look at
what obesity contributes to. Being more holistic, treating the
mind, body, spirit kind of whole- body approach was exactly what was
in tune and in harmony with my personal beliefs and philosophy. Here at the VA we understand that
obesity is the common denominator to these other diseases, to
depression, to diabetes, to blood pressure and heart disease. Every day I get more
and more healthy. Every day I get better results. One of the things I like best
about the VA is the computerized medical record. I know what’s been done so
I don’t have to repeat those studies and I can just move forward.
Exercise is one of those real key cornerstones of good health,
weight management, really easy with just a simple band doing a workout that
anybody can do. I go home every day with a smile when I see my patients’
weight graphs going down and what’s so rewarding about this is I can
work with the highest risk patients and I can get them to turn around. [Background Music fade]
