Dr. Rodrick McKinlay – Gastric Sleeve

– My name is Rod McKinlay. I’m a general and bariatric surgeon here at St. Mark’s Hospital. The sleeve operation actually is less complicated than a gastric bypass, a bit more straightforward to perform. It provides weight loss
that is very close to that of gastric bypass,
typically a little bit less, but it also reduces significantly the potential for complications
after the surgery, specifically intestinal
related complications, nutritional complications. So, it has the lowest risk profile than any of the major bariatric operations that really do provide
substantial weight loss. St. Mark’s also has a
risks and benefits class that we help to staff so
that we can answer questions. It really turns out to be very meaningful I think to the patients
because they get to ask whatever they want. There’s no illegal or unwelcome question, so if it has to do with,
well what about excess skin? What if I wanna get pregnant? What if I, you know, what’s
the outlook in 10 years? What if I have a complication? Whatever they wanna ask, they can. This is their entry into the system.
