Dr. Katherine Duncan – Obesity Medicine – Profile

Obesity is a chronic disease, it’s a lifelong
journey, it’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint. Sometimes there are ups and downs and when my patients are going through one of those down periods I am totally here for them and we figure it
out together. Hi, I’m Dr. Katherine Duncan, but most people
call me Katie. So, one of my greatest accomplishments was
completing an obesity medicine fellowship and there are only about 40 physicians in
the country with fellowship training in obesity. Obesity medicine is a field of medicine that’s
dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of patients with obesity and other patients who
have medical problems related to their weight. I work a lot with my patients on optimizing
their nutrition and along with that we talk about physical activity. I really encourage my patients to find something
that they love because that’s the only way they are going to continue to do it. I know that not every patient with obesity
is exactly alike and patients need to be treated with an individualized approach so that you
can really get down to the factors that contribute to their disease. For me, I love to get out and go hiking, I
like to do pilates, I like running or going for a bike ride. There are lots of ways to be physically active
and it doesn’t necessarily mean joining a gym. One of my favorite parts of my job is when
I get to discontinue medications. I had a patient, a couple years ago who lost
about 60 pounds and she came into my office and I noticed that her blood pressure was
really on the lower end and I said to her, “Hey, you know what, I think it’s time we stopped
your blood pressure medication” She was so excited about being able to stop
this medication. It is so fun to see patients lose weight and
have them come into my office and just get so excited about the improvements they’ve
made.
