Dr. Jeremy Korman – Gastric Bypass Part 1

The gastric bypass is a surgery
that’s been done for over 30 years, that’s a long track record important that it has a long follow-up
period, so we know over the long term what to
expect with these patients. The patients often ask: “Well, we do the surgery now and I lose a
lot of weight in the next couple of years, but in 20 years what happens?” And we can reassure patients that we have followed patients over
30 years beyond the time of surgery. What I like to tell patients is that
the only good long-term data that we have for that period of time
is that we expect you to live longer, so I hope that’s adequate! The gastric bypass has been
called “the gold standard”, patients lose weight very
dramatically and rapidly, we expect about 70% to 75% of their
excess weight, of their overweight to have been lost over about
a year to a year and a half. With that, we see dramatic
improvements in medical conditions that these patients often have, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep
apnea, reflux disease, heart disease, so the gastric bypass has proven itself
to be very effective in both long-term weight loss and
improvement of medical conditions that occur as a result of obesity.
