Developing a Supportive Bariatrics Program

Developing a Supportive Bariatrics Program

Fifteen years ago, there was no support system. They didn’t know what to tell you to eat. They said, “Double up on your vitamins and make sure you don’t eat too much. Get plenty of protein”, but there was no list of proteins. Really, you were kind of flying blind. When we developed the program with Brookwood Baptist, I wanted a bariatric bible that patients could open and know, “Oh! At this point I can have this, at this point I can have this!” I did not want them suffering through what I suffered through. We have a three-and-a-half-hour nutrition, pre-admission and exercise class that every patient takes. During that time, we go over your diet, how it progresses after surgery, and even will follow you the rest of your life. There’s very few things that my patients don’t come to me and talk to me about that I can’t say, “Hey! I was there. I remember that!”, because I lived it, and now I want it to be an easier journey for our patients.
