Canola Oil and Type 2 Diabetes

Canola Oil and Type 2 Diabetes

The overall view of the trial was basically to see whether
using canola oil, we could lower the glycemic load of
a low glycemic index diet. In other words, using oil we could
replace some of the hire glycemic index carbohydrates in
a diabetic diet, and whether if we did that, we’d see
effects on cardiovascular risk in addition to
seeing what would predict anyway, which were improvements in blood glucose control. What we saw was indeed the
predicted improvement in blood glucose control which was small because we’re comparing it with a very good diet anyway, a high cereal fiber diet whole of wheat
products but also we saw a difference which we’ve
not usually seen with low glycemic index studies of this kind, and that and that was a reduction in LDL. The thing for us that was a big interest
was because of the reduction in blood lipids, we’d get approximately a 10 percent
reduction in cardiovascular risk in other words the number of
cardiovascular events in 100 people over a 10-year period. We
would imagine the canola oil, because it’s a it’s a
source mono-unsaturated fat just like olive oil is, but canola oil also has a source omega-3 fats, the n-3 fats that everyone’s talking about. We reckon that it was standard sliced
bread and and had a standard amount of fat in it, we knew that you were getting so much of the
canola oil. If you’re having and naturally then you can put it has as basically as the Mediterranean folk do, marinate your vegetables, cook your vegetables, boil your vegetables and then pour your oil on the top. You actually don’t need as much oil to get a really good oily flavour, an
only taste. So I think marination of vegetables, these
sorts of things are good. Bruschetta, where you mop up your your olive oil on bread
and perhaps have some some diced tomatoes with them be
some things. Hopefully that they’re making lower glycemic index food choices where possible. And what one is saying is that if you if you
enjoy something fatty in your diet, this is fine – try with canola.
