Bariatrics: Andrew Wheeler, MD

Hi, I’m Dr. Andrew Wheeler, and I’m the Chief
of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at MU Health Care. In other words, I’m altering people’s gastrointestinal
system to help them lose weight when conventional methods such as diet and exercise are not
successful. It’s not just a one-time, quick operation
and it’s done, it’s really potentially even a lifelong relationship with a person that
I’m going to develop as they go through it, as they may have struggles or challenges. They need to have confidence that I’m going
to be there for them from the first day until the last. When my parents would say, ‘What do you want
to do when you grow up?’ It was always to be a doctor. Working with weight-loss surgeons and seeing
the impact that it had on people’s lives, seeing the outcomes that they had and also
seeing the continual evolution of the technology and the procedures that would help people,
I saw that this was a great opportunity to really help people become healthier on a daily
basis. So, pretty much when I’m not at work, I’m
at the soccer field. My three daughters play soccer here in Columbia
with Sporting Columbia, and they absolutely love soccer. My dad and I also have a farm in southwest
Missouri, so I raise registered angus. The people of Missouri are unique and they’re
special, and as we move away from the area or your visit other parts of the country,
you can tell that the Midwest and in particular Missouri has a very special and unique group
of people. When you come into my office, I’m gonna listen
to you. I’m gonna hear where you’re coming from. I’m gonna hear what your goals are, and then
I’m gonna do everything I can to help you achieve those goals.
