Hi I’m Dr.Skinny, Choi Bo Yoon. Do you guys know what “Ha-bi” means? I am not talking about “hobby.” I think you would know this word, if you care about body shape. It’s a shorthand for ‘lower body obesity.’ Actually I had that problem until when I was in my 20’s.
[Dr. Choi was fat in lower body, too?] I was famous for wearing pants only in college years. I would always wear long pants even if it gets really hot in summer and I remember wearing a pair of shorts, gathering my courage, for a 2002 World Cup cheer night outside. What’s more unfortunate is that I tried so hard to lose weight in my lower body but I still haven’t succeeded. It was only in my late 20’s that I studied weight loss which was after I got my medical license. I think it had to do with my wrong lifestyle habits without a full understanding of our bodies. If I look at my patients at the clinic, I see many of them who are going through the same trials and errors as me. Today, I am going to talk about the-three-don’ts to escape the obesity in lower body parts. [What kind of body type did you have?] My lower body type was a complex one. I had muscles, fat and swelling. All three! [She has it all] I tend to develop muscles easily and I was a track runner in elementary school years. I ranked first in a competition. My record was 13 seconds for 100 meters. I ran fast so I would run everyday when I go to school, for a distance ranging 4 to 5 bus stops. So my calves and thighs kept getting bigger and bigger. And I tend to make a lot of effort. Some of my savvy friends would play after studying for a while but I would sit down all day and study. That led to a lot of swelling in my lower body parts and this led to leg cellulites so it was a combination of muscles, swelling and fatty cellulites in one case. [What is a big don’t do?] The first one is 100 squats That’s as strenuous as one hour of cycling. Many people think it will help to lose weight in thigh areas. But an intense work-out in thigh area can worsen the cellulites formation and bulks up thighs. Remember your abs work-out doesn’t mean you lose weight in your belly! [Please refer back to exercise of the devil (entire body exercise)] The overall fat reduction comes as you eat less and burn more calories in general parts of the body and you don’t lose weight in a certain area because you do exercise in the area alone. And in your lower body areas, intense workout can mean thicker thighs rather than you losing weight. I look at a lot of different body types and I look at the legs and I know how much workout is done and I can tell how much cycling was involved. Generally, the muscles around the knees are protruded and the frontal muscles on your thighs, if they are developed more than usual, that means you work out more than necessary. It’s no problem if you like the muscular leg lines. If you want lean legs rather than very muscular ones, you need to change the workout style. Squatting or cycling helps you bulk up so you get bigger in general and thighs will get bigger and cellulites can increase, too. I will explain why. Cellulites are not normal fat and it’s a deformed fat that turned into fiber in between fat cells. And if we continue doing strenuous workout and adhering to wrong postures [Please refer to Swelling Becomes Your Fat episode] it will cause infections in muscles and joints by causing damage and this creates fiber-ization of fat cells in this environment. Then cellulites are created. [Real fact] Intense workout is not good for tackling lower body obesity. Squat cycling is okay. But I don’t recommend that you go beyond your limits and the best thing to do is overall body workout.
[Please refer to Exercise of the Devil episode (overall body workout)] Try the exercise that uses your entire body and it’s good to burn your calories. The second is not changing your diet while working out. The best way to lose weight is to eat less [Watch Doctor’s Diet episode] Adjusting your diet. I didn’t know this and kept working out until my 20’s. [Watch Doctor’s Diet episode] I worked out so hard but would lose only one kilogram so I either gave up or increased the intensity of the exercise. I used to love bread in particular. Carbohydrates- intense meals can lead to swelling and cellulites in our body. Carbs like flour can lead to a spike in sugar level in our bodies and this can lead to excretion of a hormone called insulin and too much of it is always the problem. Excessive insulin reduces urine by stimulating kidney and this can result in body swelling. Insulin can lead to cellulites by turning protoplasm into sugar. You eat carbs, insulin increases and your body swells. Fat increases and it’s not just fat and it’s bumpy fat layers that are cellulites. That’s why you need to focus on the right diet that reduces carbs. The third is tight pants. The stretchy pants make your legs look fatter so I used to wear tight pants. I felt like they gave my legs a better-looking line. This is also wrong. It blocks blood circulation and it leads to swelling by blocking lymph and blood circulation. Swelling means water that’s stuck [Watch Swelling Becomes Your Fat] It’s not clean water that goes in-between your fat cells and the water becomes sticky and eventually infectious and they become sticky and fiber-like and eventually become cellulites. So it’s advised to avoid tight pants to prevent obesity in lower body parts. Circulation is essential so please avoid tight clothes and crossing your legs.=and stretching is better than intense workout. Today, I walked you through lower body obesity and how to avoid it. I hope you all succeed by checking the three boxes. Thank you.
